The careful planning of journeys is essential to ensure birds are only on the lorry for the minimum amount of time and to ensure transport time is within the current legislation (The Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 1997). Planning should take into account traffic flow and weather conditions and, ideally, the movement of birds should take place overnight or in the early morning.
Recommendations
133. Adequate provision should be made in the event of lorry break-down by ensuring back-up lorries are available.
134. All vehicles should be thoroughly cleansed and disinfected after each journey.
